How to Practice Mindful Meditation for Peace and Comfort
Are you struggling to manage your emotions during a challenging time in your life or significant life transition?
You're not alone. In fact, it's quite common to be bombarded with a barrage of feelings and be unsure of how to handle each one as they come and go. Often, it feels as though you are on a rollercoaster ride with your emotions - highs, lows, twists, and turns.
Throughout my life, I have faced several adversities and significant list transitions - infertility, divorce, financial hardship, job loss, and the loss of my dad, to name a few. The later rocked my world, and I wasn't quite sure I was going to find myself out of the depths of hell, but I did!
With perseverance, grit, my faith, and a desire to holistically heal myself, I embarked on a transformative journey that helped me grow emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Overall, I experienced a profound life transformation!
I learned to embrace each moment with mindfulness, let go of what I cannot control, and find peace in the stillness of life. I began to delve deeper into mindfulness, meditation, and mindset to help support and manage my emotions.
After being diagnosed with major recurrent depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), I knew there had to be a better way to care for myself rather than throw a bandaid on it with some medication. While I graciously accepted the help of my doctor, I knew that deep down, this would only be temporary.
One of the first practices I put into place was mindful meditation. This simple practice has had a positive and profound impact on my life! Not only did it help me manage my emotions, but it also supported me in the following ways.
Gain a more restful night's rest
Lowered my stress levels
Aided in my weight-loss goals
Increased mental, clarity focus and attention
Reduced recurrent negative thoughts
Eliminated my anxiety attacks
Banished my depression
To say mindful meditation changed my life is an understatement - it completely TRANSFORMED IT!
Furthermore, to understand mindful meditation, let's break it down to the basics so we can delve deeper into the topic.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a state of being consciously aware of something from a nonjudgmental lens, and it's intentional. Therefore, when it comes to emotional management, it is essential to be mindful of your surroundings and the situation that is causing you to experience negative emotions.
What is mindful meditation?
Mindful meditation typically involves breathing exercises, mental imagery or visualization, awareness of your body, mind, and five senses to promote body relaxation. The goal is to slow down racing thoughts, release negative emotions or feelings, calm your mind and body.
How to practice mindful meditation?
Mindful meditation can be done anywhere and doesn't require any fancy equipment, but if you want to use candles, essential oils, crystals, etc., you're welcome to add them to the process. To prepare, you simply need a comfortable place to sit, five minutes of free time, and a judgment-free mindset.
A step-by-step guide to simple mindful meditation:
Find a comfortable place to sit that feels calm and relaxing for you.
Determine how long you plan to meditate. If you're a beginner, choose a shorter time frame, such as 3-5 minutes. A timer is recommended so that you can focus and not worry about the time.
Close your eyes and ground yourself using the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique that is widely used by psychologists (with a slight twist).
Five things you SEE.
Four things you FEEL.
Three things you HEAR.
Two things you SMELL.
One thing you find POSITIVE about yourself, situation, or your surroundings.
Set an intention and say a prayer.
Notice your body and its physical state.
Slow your breathing and inhale for 3 counts and exhale for 3 counts.
Follow the rhythm and sensation of the breath as you inhale and exhale.
Notice when your mind wanders and redirect your focus to breathing.
Close with kindness and gratitude by making a note of your surroundings, how you feel, what you're grateful for, etc.
I recommend setting aside time daily to practice mindful meditation. Start with 3-5 minutes and grow from there. The more you engage in this practice, the longer you will be able to meditate.
As you can see, mindful meditation doesn’t have to be a time consuming or challenging process. It’s merely about the intent and commitment to see it through. By doing so, you will experience a shift and gain control of your emotions, where you will find peace and comfort no matter what you are facing throughout your life.
